VISION QUEST

Its all happening!   I am now headed for a week-long adventure down in Costa Rica.  I chose (somewhat arbitrarily) Del Mar Surf Camp as my home base, and I'm pretty impressed with what they've set up for me so far.  They provide breakfast, lunch and dinner at this place, a daily surf lesson with someone named Walter, daily yoga and personalized tours of the town and jungle with my very own hosts David and Yorgina.  Throw in a massage mid-week and I'm good.  I've never been the biggest yoga-enthusiast, but I think taking an hour every day to decompress/recalibrate will be healthy for me. The only thing this place can't provide is scuba diving...but I was able to find a local dive shop 12 miles a way so should be able to get some dives in early on in the week. Fingers crossed conditions will be good enough for a night dive too - one of my hands down favorite experiences ever.

Overall, Delmar has done a bangup job of structuring the week, but still giving me plenty of downtime to go with the flow out there. It'll be refreshing to spend 9 days on a minimalist's schedule and see where this adventure takes me.

SONIA. WINS.

Well, I did it!  Not sure how it happened, but I somehow managed to win 1st place in CrossFit South Brooklyn's "Look, Feel, Perform Better Challenge."  I mean, I guess I know how it happened...I subsisted on nuts, berries and steamed fish for six weeks and dragged myself to the gym on a semi-regular basis.  Biggest thing I've learned is I'm way too hard on myself.  I am a do-er. I accomplish things I set my mind to, I just need to set my mind to it.  I don't have to be perfect to achieve results, just need to keep my focus on what's important to me.  It was also good to realize that eating healthfully and cutting back on alcohol actually makes life MORE enjoyable, not less so.  And I'm not done yet.  The Grand Prize was two full months of free gym membership, which is kinda insane.  Now I need to get my money's-worth and make another 6 weeks worth of progress for spring.

This weekend was CFSB's Iron Maidens Raw Open and there is a part of me that really wishes I competed.  I know I'm nowhere near the level of fitness the awesome ladies competing there today have achieved, but I need to stop being scared and do something outside my comfort zone.  In another six weeks, I think I'll be confident enough to sign up for a competition this summer.  Its a good goal to have.

In the meantime, I've got another two weeks of preparation for my Costa Rica Vision Quest!   I dragged out the old pack yesterday and dusted off all my diving gear. Its been far too long since I've gone diving -- hoping the water will be calm enough to get some underwater exploration in.  Its one of my favorite things in this whole wide world.  Something so calming about it, lying suspended in the beautiful blue, the tides softly pulling you two and fro, just another goofy clown fish floating in a sea full of benevolent monsters.  How lovely it will be to indulge in a simpler way of life for nine days.  Wake up at dawn, maybe eat some bananas, surf, write, lie in the sun, explore something strange and new and beautiful.  Sit with my thoughts.  Crazy to think that the simplest, easiest things in life are luxuries here in the city.  Nature.  Solitude. Peace.  All free here in the good old U.S. of A, but man, is it hard to find the time to take advantage of them.  Funny to think there is more possibility in those nine simple days than in the other 356 ahead of me.

Or maybe not.  Guess I'll find out soon.

A 3-DAY THING I'M TRYING

As CrossFit SouthBrooklyn's "Look, Feel, Perform Better Challenge" comes to a close, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed with my results.  To be totally fair, I've made some great progress and am pleased with my overall level of health these days...but lets just say squeezing into the lace gown I am meant to wear to the Oscars on Sunday wasn't the most life-altering experience for me last Friday.  But instead of weeping into a pair of Spanx I decided to turn to my good friend who recently performed some crazy 3-day voodoo on herself just prior to her vacation in the British Virgin Islands.  She looked INCREDIBLE and she shared with me this crazy plan which I guess is meant to deflate you into the most compact version of yourself.  Girl said she lost 7lbs in 3 days which seems a bit intense, but hey, I'm in dire straights so I'll take it.  The premise is pretty simple.  You stoke your metabolism by feeding yourself every two hours with incredibly lean, bland foods and throw in a teaspoon of coconut oil here and there for good measure. Upon first glance, it seems like WAY more food than I normally eat, but I figured what the heck, what do I have to lose at this point.

The morning began with a 1/4 cup of steel cut oats mixed with some cinnamon, some scrambled egg whites with hot sauce, black coffee and a teaspoon of coconut oil.  (I'm not sure what the oil is supposed to do but it tastes delicious, so I'm not complaining).

Two hours later, I steamed a small portion of chicken breast and a small sweet potato and ate it without any seasoning at all.

Two hours after that, I steamed a piece of  tilapia and a whole bunch of broccoli spritzed with fresh lemon juice.

Two hours after that, I had another small piece of steamed chicken breast and ate it with more steamed broccoli.  This time, I added some hot sauce.  And then another teaspoon of coconut oil.

Two hours after that, I steamed the rest of the tilapia fillet and ate it with an entire orange bell pepper.  Also steamed. Topped it off with another spoonful of coconut oil.

And finally? An hour and a half after that, I had a little ground turkey mixed with cayenne and cumin.   And a whole bunch of steamed asparagus.  With lemon and hot sauce.

Oh yeah, and then you also drink a GALLON of water.  So I did that.  And the whole thing was mind-crushingly boring.   So boring, in fact, that the careful preparation of each of those six mini-meals HAS to be intended to distract you from how unremarkable they are. But you're not really hungry per se, just generally unsatisfied at all times.  Its what I imagine its like to eat in the wild, if we were hunter/gatherers still wandering the plains.  You know, eating to quell the hunger pangs rather than for any other real enjoyment.

Supposedly you do this for three days and become completely transformed.  I got two more days of this...so we shall see!  Worst case scenario, I call up Blueprint on Tuesday but will see how this healthful debloat works out for me.

WOD - 2.14.15

Front squat - 3x3x3 - 90lbs

10:00
5 ring rows
10 push-ups
15 squats
9 rounds + 5 rr + 7 pushups

Improved from:
7 rounds + 5 rr + 9 pushups

3:00 Row
33 Calories

Thoughts:  Front squat was way easier than it ever has been.  I think I could have easily squatted 100 if not more.  But good I'm taking it slow, I guess.  HUGE improvement in the Challenge Workout!  9 Rounds plus 5 Ring Rows and 7 pushups.  Pushups are still the killer for me, but I can feel myself getting better.  My rowing capacity hasn't really changed any.  I need to improve upon my rowing skillz for sure.  Always tend to zone out in a happy place when I row, I find it quite enjoyable which means I'm not really trying very hard.  Went from 30 calories to 33.  Kinda lame.  Need to work on it some more.

Its amazing to see how much stronger I've become during these past 2 cycles during the Challenge - I've made more progress (without backsliding) than I have in the whole past year.  Its really gratifying to see myself progress like this.  I can't wait to see where I am in April.
